Ludwig van Beethoven composed 'Für Elise' (Bagatelle No. 25 in A minor) around 1810. The identity of 'Elise' remains debated, with some scholars suggesting it was Therese Malfatti, a woman Beethoven reportedly proposed to.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart began composing at age five and wrote his first symphony at age eight. By his death at 35, he had composed over 600 works including operas, symphonies, and concertos.
Antonio Vivaldi composed 'The Four Seasons' around 1720. Each of the four concertos represents a season and is accompanied by a sonnet describing that season. It remains one of the most popular pieces of Baroque music.
Ludwig van Beethoven began losing his hearing in his late twenties and was almost completely deaf by 1814. Despite this, he composed some of his greatest works while deaf, including his Ninth Symphony.
George Frideric Handel composed 'Messiah' in 1741, including the famous 'Hallelujah' chorus. Legend says King George II stood during its performance, starting a tradition that continues to this day.
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky composed 'Swan Lake' (1876), 'The Sleeping Beauty' (1889), and 'The Nutcracker' (1892). These three ballets remain among the most frequently performed in the world.
Frédéric Chopin is considered one of the greatest piano composers of all time. Nearly all of his compositions were written for solo piano, and he composed over 200 works during his short life (1810-1849).
Johann Sebastian Bach served as Cantor (musical director) of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, Germany, from 1723 until his death in 1750. During this time, he composed many of his greatest works.
Verdi's 'Aida,' premiered in 1871, tells the story of Aida, an Ethiopian princess captured and enslaved in Egypt, and her forbidden love with the Egyptian military commander Radamès. It was commissioned for the opening of the Khedivial Opera House in Cairo.
Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, completed in 1808, opens with one of the most famous motifs in all of music: three short notes followed by one long note. This motif recurs throughout the entire symphony.
Igor Stravinsky's ballet 'The Rite of Spring' premiered in Paris on May 29, 1913, and its avant-garde music and choreography provoked a near-riot among the audience. It is now considered one of the most influential compositions of the 20th century.
Mozart's opera 'Don Giovanni,' premiered in 1787, is based on the legend of Don Juan. It blends comedy with darker dramatic elements and is considered one of the greatest operas ever written.
Richard Wagner composed 'Der Ring des Nibelungen' over about 26 years (1848-1874). The four operas — Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung — total approximately 15 hours of music.
Johann Sebastian Bach composed 'The Well-Tempered Clavier,' a collection of preludes and fugues in all 24 major and minor keys. Published in two books (1722 and 1742), it is considered one of the most important works in the history of Western classical music.
Joseph Haydn is known as the 'Father of the Symphony' and the 'Father of the String Quartet.' He composed 104 symphonies and played a central role in developing these musical forms during the Classical period.
