Answer Key
Dolphins are mammals. They breathe air, are warm-blooded, give birth to live young, and nurse their babies with milk.
Turtles are reptiles. They have scaly skin, are cold-blooded, and lay eggs on land. Frogs, salamanders, and toads are all amphibians.
Penguins are birds (class Aves). Although they cannot fly, they have feathers, lay eggs, and are warm-blooded like all birds.
Newts are amphibians. They spend part of their life in water and part on land, and undergo metamorphosis from aquatic larvae to adults.
Ladybugs (ladybirds) are insects with six legs and three body segments. Spiders, scorpions, and ticks are arachnids with eight legs.
Despite its name and enormous size, a whale shark is indeed a fish — specifically a shark. It is the largest living species of fish.
Koalas are marsupials, meaning they carry and nurse their young in a pouch. They are native to Australia.
Lobsters are crustaceans with a hard exoskeleton, segmented bodies, and jointed limbs. Octopuses are mollusks, clams are bivalves, and jellyfish are cnidarians.
The platypus is a monotreme — an egg-laying mammal. Monotremes are the most primitive group of living mammals, found only in Australia and New Guinea.
Seahorses are fish. They breathe through gills and live entirely underwater. Porpoises, manatees, and sea lions are all marine mammals.
The nautilus is a cephalopod, related to octopuses and squids. Sea urchins, starfish, and sea cucumbers are all echinoderms.
Bats belong to the order Chiroptera, meaning 'hand wing.' They are the only mammals capable of true sustained flight.
Tuataras belong to the order Rhynchocephalia (sometimes called Sphenodontia). They are the sole surviving members of this ancient reptile order.
Stingrays are cartilaginous fish (class Chondrichthyes), meaning their skeletons are made of cartilage rather than bone, like sharks and skates.
Axolotls exhibit neoteny — they retain their juvenile aquatic features (like gills) throughout adulthood without undergoing full metamorphosis into a terrestrial form.
