Answer Key
X represents 10 in Roman numerals. It is one of the seven basic symbols used in the system.
L represents 50 in Roman numerals. The seven basic Roman numeral symbols are I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500), and M (1000).
XV equals 15. When a smaller numeral follows a larger one, you add them: X (10) + V (5) = 15.
VII equals 7. V (5) + I (1) + I (1) = 7.
3 is written as III in Roman numerals — three ones added together.
IV equals 4. When a smaller numeral precedes a larger one, you subtract: V (5) - I (1) = 4.
XC equals 90. X (10) before C (100) means subtraction: 100 - 10 = 90.
40 is written as XL. X (10) before L (50) means subtraction: 50 - 10 = 40. Romans never used four of the same symbol in a row.
LXVI equals 66. L (50) + X (10) + V (5) + I (1) = 66.
99 is written as XCIX. XC (90) + IX (9) = 99. The subtractive principle only works with specific pairs.
CDXLIV equals 444. CD (400) + XL (40) + IV (4) = 444.
1999 is written as MCMXCIX. M (1000) + CM (900) + XC (90) + IX (9) = 1999.
MMCDLXXVIII equals 2478. MM (2000) + CD (400) + LXX (70) + VIII (8) = 2478.
VX is not valid. In Roman numerals, V (5) cannot be used as a subtractive prefix. Only I, X, and C can be used subtractively.
MCMLXIV equals 1964. M (1000) + CM (900) + LX (60) + IV (4) = 1964.
