How to play Mahjong Solitaire
About 12 minutes per game. Step-by-step rules, in plain English.
Understand the layout
144 tiles are stacked in a pyramid or turtle shape, with some tiles resting on top of others. Each tile is one of several Chinese-style designs (dots, bamboo, characters, dragons, winds, and seasons).
Find free tiles
A tile is 'free' if it has no tile on top of it AND has at least one of its long sides (left or right) open. Only free tiles can be selected.
Match identical pairs
Tap two free tiles with the same design to remove them. Most tiles match by exact image, but flowers and seasons match within their group (any flower matches any flower).
Plan ahead — order matters
If both copies of a tile are buried, the puzzle becomes unsolvable. Try to clear blocking tiles first, especially around the edges and the top of stacks.
Use undo and hint when stuck
Undo lets you take back moves. Hint highlights one legal pair so you can keep progressing.
Win by clearing the entire board
The puzzle is solved when no tiles remain.
Frequently asked questions
Is Mahjong Solitaire the same as four-player Mahjong?
No. Mahjong Solitaire (sometimes called Shanghai or Taipei) is a one-player tile-matching puzzle. Traditional Mahjong is a four-player game with completely different rules. They share the same beautiful tile set, that's all.
Is Mahjong Solitaire free to play online?
Yes. SeniorBrainGames offers Mahjong Solitaire completely free with large, easy-to-read tiles. Works offline once loaded.
Why can't I select a tile?
Only 'free' tiles can be selected. A tile is free when nothing is on top of it AND at least one of its long sides (left or right) is open. Buried tiles must be uncovered first.
Are all Mahjong Solitaire boards solvable?
Most are, but not all. Some random shuffles produce dead-end positions where no winning sequence exists. Use undo to back up and try a different order, or start a new game.
