How to play Klondike Solitaire
About 8 minutes per game. Step-by-step rules, in plain English.
Set up the tableau
Cards are dealt into seven columns of increasing length (1 to 7 cards). Only the bottom card of each column starts face-up; the rest of the deck becomes the stock pile.
Build foundations from Ace upward
When you uncover an Ace, move it to one of the four foundation piles. Build each foundation up by suit: Ace, 2, 3, ... King.
Build tableau columns down by alternating colors
Move cards between tableau columns by stacking lower-rank cards onto higher-rank cards of the opposite color. For example, a red 7 can go on a black 8.
Flip new cards from the stock pile
Tap the stock pile to draw a card to the waste pile. Use waste cards on the tableau or foundations.
Empty columns can hold a King
Only Kings (or sequences led by a King) may be placed on an empty tableau column.
Win by completing all four foundations
The game ends when every foundation has Ace through King in its suit.
Frequently asked questions
Is Klondike Solitaire free to play online?
Yes. SeniorBrainGames offers Klondike Solitaire completely free, with no signup, no ads on top of the game, and large senior-friendly cards. It also works offline once loaded.
Can I play Klondike Solitaire offline?
Yes. SeniorBrainGames is a Progressive Web App. Visit the Klondike page once and the game is cached on your device — you can play without an internet connection afterward.
Why am I losing so often at Klondike?
Many Klondike deals are mathematically unwinnable — somewhere between 1 in 5 and 1 in 7 deals can't be won regardless of skill. If you want a solitaire that's almost always winnable with the right play, try FreeCell instead.
What's the difference between Klondike and other solitaires?
Klondike has hidden cards (cards under the stock pile and face-down columns), so luck plays a real role. FreeCell deals all cards face-up — pure skill. Spider uses two decks and ten columns, building runs by suit. All three are available free here.
